Shrubs - Bird of paradise (Mexican)

Shrubs - Bird of paradise (Mexican)

Mexican bird of paradise (aka Yellow Bird) is a thornless shrub or small tree boasting flamboyant clusters of bright, yellow flowers from summer to fall.  Fine textured foliage gives way to large slightly curved seedpods.  This plant thrives in heat, is moderately fast growing and makes a wonderful large accent shrub or can be pruned into a tree.  Virtually pest and disease free  Grows up to 10-12ft tall and wide.  Native to Mexico.  Pods and seeds are reported to be poisonous and are toxic to dogs and cats.

These are popular in the Phoenix area – you’ve probably seen plenty of these around town.  The Mexican bird of paradise also attracts hummingbirds!

Scientific name:  Caesalpinia mexicana
