September is here!

The scorching heat is becoming a memory & temps are cooling off.  Your plants and trees are noticing too.  Mid to end September serves as a transitional month ripe with opportunity to get back out in the garden and enjoy our Phoenix autumn.  As our temps start to dip below 100, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Planting

Fall in Phoenix is still a wonderful time for beautiful flowers and to plant shrubs and trees.  Get those trees, shrubs & vines in the ground so they can become established before any frost.

Watering

As temps begin to drop, plants won’t need to be watered as often.  Be sure to adjust your watering schedule to accommodate the decreasing temps.

Mulching

It’s an excellent idea to mulch your plants and trees now.  It will continue to help your water retention, regulate temperatures and more!

Pruning

Clear away any dead branches from your plant.  But resist the urge to prune flowering shrubs completely down.  Several native plants will bloom again in fall.  Enjoy the blooms and wait until early spring to prune for managing size.

Citrus

If you haven’t fertilized at Labor Day, September is the time to do it.
